GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Director James Gunn Claims He Almost Killed Gamora in Vol. 2

As we approach the final chapter of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy that was so painstakingly crafted by the director James Gunnsome may wonder how the director was able to create a franchise that spanned not just three feature films, but also jumped into the other Marvel films alongside him. Avengers: Infinity War AND Avengers: Finale both had major ramifications for Guardians, so it really mattered what the directors of Gunn and the Avengers (The Russo Brothers) had planned, as the films intersected.

Apparently, even Gunn wasn’t entirely sure how things were going to go from the start. He almost killed Gamora in the second Guardians movie! ComicBook met Gunn at Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 junket, and they asked him about the character of Gamora, who died in Infinity War and returned in Endgame as a whole new person. Gunn explained:

“So things always change and you never know. But Gamora almost died vol. 2. I knew from the start that Zoe just wanted to play the character for so many years, and she was very honest that she’s done [after this]. And so I would have killed her. I thought she was the one who would sacrifice, and Quill would learn something about himself from the second film, and I thought differently. Kevin kind of dissuaded me [Feige] and Lou [D’Esposito], and then it didn’t work so well. It didn’t feel right, it felt much more right to go where we go in that movie. It felt like what was correct for the story. I think at the time I was scared to kill Michael Rooker because he’s my friend.

“So I felt bad about killing Rooker and I didn’t want to do it. But that’s where the story naturally flowed. called and they said: “We are thinking about it, does it work? Can you work with this?” And I said, “I get it, yeah. I really can. And I think it works really well for the third movie.”

The Infinity Saga really came together perfectly. I think that’s why the president of the MCU Kevin Feige he gets so much credit, because across the movies and all the different writers and directors, he’s overseen everything and he’s been totally consistent.

It will be interesting to see how the Guardians wrap up their galactic adventures. The reviews have been stellar, so I can’t wait to see what happens.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released in theaters this Friday, May 5.
