One of the many things that The Mandalorian Season 3 revealed to us that Empire is alive and well and making big plans to fight back. Moff Gideon’s forces are just part of the Imperial Remnant, which is led by the Shadow Council, and the resurgent Empire is just awaiting the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn, which will be between Star Wars: Ahsoka within the next year.

I love Jon Favreau AND Dave Filoni they’re exploring this side of the story, the state of the Galaxy after the Empire’s defeat. As we have seen, the New Republic is trying to build something better and new, but it is struggling. It certainly doesn’t help that the former Imperials have been reintegrated into society and are secretly aiding the rise of the Empire.
During an interview with Empire, Filoni talked about expanding The New Republic era into The Mandalorian and the other Star Wars it shows that it is working on how Boba Fett’s book, Ahsoka, Skeleton crew, and his recently announced film. There are many stories to be told in this era, and Filoni is obviously enjoying himself. He explains:
“I always relate to my Star Wars experience and think, ‘How am I going to give to kids now [that] sensation?’ Something I understood as a kid was the conflict established in A New Hope: Rebels Against the Empire. I thought something in the Expanded Universe that was very easy to understand was, in the New Republic and the Remnant Empire, things had flipped a bit.”
He went on to explain that the Empire acts more like the Rebels, saying:
“It’s actually the Empire that acts more like the Rebels, because their resources are low. But the New Republic is struggling because, while they all try to work together, they have different ideas about how to be effective. That was an interesting story. And I think it creates a great piece of history where you can tell all kinds of stories.
This will make the narrative interesting and dynamic within the Star Wars universe. The New Republic is facing some big challenges as they try to build something new and all of that is at risk with the rise of the Empire. They won’t have a chance to get to the solid foundation they need before the Empire returns as the First Order. Filoni continued by saying:
“If you take and place Mando in the original trilogy’s time period, you would understand what’s going on, because you understand the politics of the day. Now, we had to establish – starting with Mandalorian and the idea with Werner Herzog that there are still Remnant Imperials in operation – that there is a Remnant Empire and a New Republic. We really only managed to [exploring] the New Republic with [the] X-Wings in the first two seasons, and we finally moved to Coruscant this last season. So it all builds a bit as we’re fleshing out this part of the galaxy.”
It’s quite interesting and exciting to know that everything they are doing with these shows is building an epic film that will “close” the interconnected stories. We still have a long way to go, but I will definitely enjoy the journey that takes us there!
Can’t wait to see more stories set in the era of the New Republic?
