In 1987, George RR Martin created the Joker cards shared universe. Since then, 29 novels, graphic novels, and anthologies have been published by a variety of authors. This July, the latest entry is launched. Wild Cards: From Time to Time: A graphic novel comes from writer Carrie Vaugh (Questland) and artist Renae De Liz (The legend of Wonder Woman). In 1946, an alien virus has ravaged the world, its results as random as a hand of cards. Infected ones draw the black queen and die, draw an ace and receive superpowers, or draw the joker and are strangely mutated.

More than a year ago, the United Nations Committee on Extraordinary Interventions sent heroines Ana Cortez and Kate Brandt — Earth Witch and Curveball — to Brazil to investigate Aurora Mission, a charity that claimed to provide education and medical assistance to people affected by the Wild Card virus. But ace and local activist Gabriel Silva denounced the abuses. Ana and Kate helped him get to the truth, which turned out to be far more sinister than anyone expected.

Ana and Kate thought the case was closed, but now a Brazilian official has questions. Did they do the right thing or did they overdo their authority? The case amply demonstrates that, even in a world of incredible power, there will always be victims.

I’m new to the world of Joker cards, but basically, all of the books take place in a world where “an alien virus that rewrites human DNA leaving some people mutated and deformed while others gain superpowers. Infected ones draw the black queen and die, draw an ace and receive superpowers, or draw the joker and are strangely mutated. This sounds very up my alley. I’m also surprised they aren’t being made into a series or movie franchise.

you can read Wild Cards: Occasionally starting July 25 from your favorite bookstores with an MSRP of $28.99 for the hardcover. Are you excited for Wild cards: from time to time? What’s your favorite voice in the Joker cards universe?
