TO UPDATE: The official shortlist for the 76th Cannes Film Festival has been announced, with 19 films in competition (see full list below). This year, previous Palme d’Or winners such as Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Nanni Moretti, Ken Loach, Wim Wenders and Hirokazu Kore-eda return to the fray. Wenders also has a film in Special Screenings, while Korea-eda with the Japanese drama monsterare back-to-back in the mix after the 2022 Korean language Real estate agent.
Other notable names who will be introducing new work to the competition include Todd Haynes with May December with Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore; Wes Anderson with the mega ensemble asteroid city; Jonathan Glazer and The Zone of Interest; and Aki Kaurismaki with fallen leaves.
Against the rest of the official selection, Steve McQueen’s occupied city especially has a special screening spot while Takeshi Kitano premieres in Cannes cube. Anurag Kashyap won a Midnight Screenings slot with kennedy and HBO’s the idol by Sam Levinson is in the out of competition category.
As usual for Cannes delegate Thierry Frémaux, more titles will be added in the coming weeks.

LAST: While a handful of key Cannes Film Festival titles have already been announced, most of the official schedule for the 76th edition will be revealed today. Deputy General Thierry Frémaux announced the lineup for the May 16-27 event this morning at the UGC Normandie cinema in Paris and we’re updating the list below. Frémaux will be joined by Iris Knobloch, former head of WarnerMedia France and Germany, who replaced Pierre Lescure as president of the Cannes Film Festival.
Before today’s roundup of films in today’s Official Selection, Indiana Jones returns to the red carpet with Harrison Ford, who will be in town for the Disney/Lucasfilm World Premiere Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Fortune James Mangold is directing.
Martin Scorsese’s latest killer of the flower moon, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, has a berth – whether it will compete remains to be seen today. Paramount will bring the Apple Original Films drama to theaters in France on October 18.
We also reported that Wes Anderson is star-studded asteroid city of Focus enters the Palais when the festival announced this week that Pedro Almodóvar’s short film, strange way of life, starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal, will have its world premiere on the Riviera.
And in Johnny Depp’s so-called “comeback” movie, which is sure to be an opening draw, Joan of Barryraise the curtain on the party on May 16.
