Many fans are worried that Rocket Raccoon will die to save his friends Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The footage that has been shared certainly seems to herald a very emotional conclusion. The film will focus on Rocket and there is a scene in the trailer where we see Peter Quill screaming and crying in agony and despair.

In the next chapter of the story, “Our beloved band of misfits are settling down on Knowhere, but it’s not long before their lives are upended by echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rallying his team around him on a perilous mission to save Rocket’s life, a mission which, if not successfully completed, could spell the end of the Guardians as we know them.”

That description of the story makes it look pretty awful for some of the characters. James Gunn We previously talked about Rocket and how that character is the reason he returned to make this third film. He explained:

“One of the reasons I came back to [make] this film was because I felt I had to tell the story of Rocket. I would have really regretted not completing the trilogy for many reasons, but I feel very connected to Rocket. I feel like no one would be able to tell the full story about him if it weren’t me.

“To me, Rocket has always been the secret protagonist of the Guardians movies. From the beginning, it’s been ingrained in who he is as a character. I think he exemplifies a lot of the traits of all Guardians. They’ve had all these traumas, and it brings them together. .I just think his is more extreme than others.

“He was totally fine being an animal, and he was transformed into something else he didn’t want to be. I think the transformation itself was extremely painful, but I also think it made him feel incredibly alienated from everyone else. In vol. 3, we learn a lot about his past: where he’s from, who he is and what he’s been through. It’s been a rough road for the little animal.

Gunn also teased the emotional aspect of the film, saying, “It’s actually quite heavy. It’s a heavier story, so it’s an emotional process to go through.”

Fans always seem to reach out to Gunn on social media asking questions and saying weird things. In a recent exchange, James Gunn responded to a couple of comments regarding Rocket’s possible death.

A fan commented on one of Gunn’s most recent posts saying he hopes “hope Rocket dies” in the film. Not sure why anyone would want to wish Rocket dead! He is crazy to me! In response to that, the director responded with a wide-eyed emoji. Some fans think Gunn is mocking Rocket’s fate, but I think it’s a way to tell the fan that he’s crazy.

In another comment, a fan stated how pissed he would be if Rocket died, saying the character doesn’t need to be killed off. Gunn responded by saying, “Nobody said he was going to die, but that’s not how stories work.”

While it seems like Rocket’s death is obvious, I’m not convinced he’s going to die. I think while the movie will take us on an emotional journey, I really don’t think Gunn is going to kill off any of these characters. I think all the teasing is misdirection and eventually all the Guardians will make it out alive. I’m trying to keep it positive here! I’m a half full guy.

This is the last movie in the series! It has to end with a happy ending!
