Steven Knight has signed on as a new writer for Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Star Wars film

Oscar-nominated Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) took on the role of screenwriter for Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoys war of stars Film following the recently announced departure of writers Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, Deadline can confirm.

Little is known about the film, although new details were to be revealed at next month’s Star Wars Celebration in London. Sources tell us that the film is likely to be one of the first for the famous Lucasfilm franchise since it was released in 2019. Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalkerif not the first.

It’s not clear what led to Lindelof and Britt-Gibson leaving the project, though the former alluded to the move in a recent interview with SlashFilm.

“All I’m saying is that the difficulty that day is extremely, extremely, extremely high for reasons I can’t get into this Sunday morning. As [the film] can’t be great, it shouldn’t exist,” Lindelof said. “I will not say more because I have the same association with [Star Wars] Like you, which means it’s the first movie I saw on my four-year-old dad’s lap in May ’77. I think it’s possible that sometimes when you’re so passionate about something and really appreciate it, you walk into the kitchen and think, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t cook. Maybe I should just eat.” Let’s leave it at that.”

Knight is a writer, director and producer best known for creating, writing and producing the critically acclaimed BBC crime drama Peaky Blinders, directed by Cillian Murphy, ran for six seasons. He also wrote and directed movies such as the Tom Hardy film curlalso scripting notable titles such as spencer, The girl in the spider web, pawn sacrifice, The Hundred Foot Journey And Eastern promisesamongst other things.
