‘The Last of Us’: Why So Few Infected Appeared in Season 1

‘The Last of Us’ finished its first season on HBO Max, solidifying itself as a television phenomenon and adding more viewers with the debut of each chapter, according to data from the chain itself. The judgments of both critics and the public are, in general, very positivealready considering it the pinnacle of video game adaptations.

'The Last of Us'

But that doesn’t mean I haven’t received their complaints. One of the most repeated is the low presence of infected people in the series. While Runners, Clickers, Stalkers, and Bloaters are some of the more common enemies in the game, the series has only used them in very specific situations. Budget issue? The showrunners explain that everything makes narrative sense and fits.

The Last of Us explains that it was a conscious decision to address all the action in the adaptation: “Part of the porting process is trying to extract the source material built around the gameplay and move it into a format that is passive. A lot of the gameplay is centered around the characters you have to deal with, whether it’s avoiding them or sneaking kills, or dealing with them face to face. It’s up to you when you play. The non-playable characters are bandits, cannibals, Phaedra or infected. There are a lot of fights, I don’t know what the number of deaths will be in a normal game of ‘The Last of Us’, but they are sure it will come in three figures. We had to decide how to present the infected. In the first season episodes, I think we ultimately harnessed the power of relationships and trying to find meaning in moments of action. Maybe there’s less action than some people wanted because we couldn’t necessarily find meaning to many of those moments, or were worried that it might get repetitive.. At the end of the day we’re not playing it, we’re watching it, and while a lot of people enjoy watching the gameplay, it needs to be a little more focused and purposeful when we do it on TV.”.

Neil Druckmann adds: “We tried to approach the action at the highest level, analyzing it on a general level. Every action scene has to advance the character in some way. If it doesn’t advance the characters, if it’s just staged, that was a very easy cut for us.”.

More infected in the second season

Mazin also warns that this shortage of infected could be because season 2 is coming strong: “I will say that even though we got the green light for a season, Neil and I already thought we couldn’t do a season without thinking about what might happen next. There’s more ‘The Last of Us’ to come. And I I think the balance is not just between episodes, but between seasons. It is very likely that there will be more infected later. And maybe more kinds of infected”.

‘The Last of Us’ will return to HBO Max Soon with its second season.
