The next March 17th, the DC Universe will bring to theaters ‘Shazam! The Fury of the Gods’. The superhero played by Zachary Levi returns to the big screen, this time accompanied by his “Shazam family”and will face new villains, Hespera and Kalypso, played by Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu.

Billy Wood returns to save the world, this time accompanied by his foster brothers, who we saw given powers at the end of the first film. Together will face the daughters of Zeuswho will come down to earth to try and kill the teenagers they accuse of stealing the power of the gods.
In addition to the preview of the superpowers that the family received, the first film also previewed the sexuality of Pedro Peña, who hinted that he is gay. Henry Gayden, the film’s screenwriter, indicated in an interview for Dorkaholics (via Attitude) that, indeed, the character played by Jovan Armand (in his teenage version) and DJ Cotrona (as a superhero) is homosexual and so it will be confirmed in the film.
Gayden said so “the only novelty for this film is to be much more direct about the fact that Pedro is gay, and this was already very subtly hinted at in the first film”. The screenwriter did too particular emphasis on the importance of making it visible and not leaving it as something secondary that could be intuited: “I think it was very important and we fought hard to include it and bring it to the fore in this film.”

As Attitude points out, the other major superhero studio, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has had years of tug-of-war with LGBTQ+ representation in its films, and although he has included some queer characters, often his homosexuality has only been hinted at, minimized or marginalized. Indeed, in an interview with BuzzFeed, James Gunn said that when someone asked him about future gay superheroes, his answer was that “There are a lot of characters in the MCU and very few have ever asked about their sexuality, whether they are homosexual, heterosexual or bisexual”adding that “There are probably gay characters in the Marvel Universe, we just don’t know who they are yet”implying that it was not something of great importance.
With the intention of so clearly exposing the homosexuality of the character of ‘Shazam! The fury of the gods’, DC takes a big step in terms of including the LGBTQ+ community in the world of superheroessomething similar to what we saw in the movie “Thor: Love and Thunder”. “super gay” from wonder.
