Seth Rogen Believes Marvel Movies Are ‘For Kids’, But Acknowledges ‘The Boys’ Wouldn’t Exist Without The MCU

Wonder is everywhere and it’s hard to ignore. Especially when you’re a major figure in Hollywood and everyone wants to know what you think of the superhero saga that has been making box office beats for the past decade. After the much debated opinions of Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino, the latest to join the conversation is Seth Rogen, a popular actor known for comedies like ‘Superbad’ or ‘Damn Neighbors’ and producer of adult comedy adaptations such as ‘Preacher’, ‘Invincible’ and ‘The Boys’.

Seth Rogen Believes Marvel Movies Are ‘For Kids’, But Acknowledges ‘The Boys’ Wouldn’t Exist Without The MCU

In an interview with Total Film magazine, Rogen acknowledges the excellent work of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, but admits that Marvel films are not to his taste, as he believes they are not meant for him. “I think Kevin Feige is a brilliant guy and a lot of the filmmakers he hired to make those movies are great directors”says the actor. “But as someone who doesn’t have kids… They’re geared towards kids, you know? Sometimes I forget..

“I think if only Marvel existed [en el mercado]that would be bad. But I think it’s clear that’s not the case.”he adds referring to the (almost) monopoly of the studio on the box office, then establishing the usual parallelism with the western era: “An example I always cite is that there was probably a time in history where a lot of filmmakers were like, ‘Do you think we’re ever going to make a non-Western movie again? Everything is a Western! Westerns rule the fucking cinema. If not take a hat, a gun and a car, people won’t go see it.'”.

As for the debate over whether or not Marvel movies are movies, a conversation that Scorsese sparked by expressing his negative opinion about it, Rogen makes the difference with which he seems to join his team: “Unfortunately, this is the situation right now we have two separate fields: there is audiovisual entertainment and there is cinema. They still overlap from time to time, but it’s become less and less frequent. And I fear that the economic dominance of one is being used to marginalize and even minimize the existence of the other.”.

Superheroes yes, but for adults

In 2011, Rogen formed his own production company, Point Gray Pictures, together with his regular collaborator, Evan Goldberg, with whom they have developed such adult films as ‘Party to the End’, ‘Damn Neighbors’, ‘The Party of the sausages’ or ‘The Disaster Artist’, and from which they prepare the next animated reboot of ‘Ninja Turtles’.

They also made the leap into television with it, where they created several projects based on adult comics, starting with ‘Preacher’. It was precisely the realization that adults had no more mature options in today’s superhero landscape that led them to produce “The Boys” (later joined by the animated “Invincible”). So, Rogen acknowledges the role Marvel played in the existence of the wild Prime Video series based on the comics by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson: “The truth is, without Marvel, ‘The Boys’ wouldn’t exist or be interesting. I’m aware of that”.

‘The Boys’ is currently filming its fourth season, while its spin-off ‘Gen V’ arrives this year on Prime Video. The second season of “Invincible” will be released at the end of the year and, moreover, will have a live-action adaptation in the form of a film.
