After Shah Rukh Khan burst out of the gate in India and 100 other markets last Wednesday Pathan closed the five-day opening weekend with a bang $66.24 million worldwide (incl $25.5 million from outside India). Several records were broken along the way, including the biggest ever opening weekend for a Bollywood film in India, North America and the UAE, and the best opening of any Indian title in the UK, Australia, Germany and more. (See a full overview below).
The action-packed spy film, directed by Siddharth Anand and starring Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, marked a huge setback for SRK, who had not appeared in a lead role on the big screen in four years. There was also Bollywood, whose industry has been struggling of late, a much-needed shot in the arm.
Add up Monday’s numbers Pathan is US$72.1 million worldwide, including US$367 million (US$45 million) gross from India. Overseas, it registered $27.6 million as of Monday.
Part of producer Aditya Chopra’s ambitious espionage universe, the Yash Raj Films title establishes SRK as the titular spy who takes on the leader of a group of mercenaries with nefarious plans to attack his homeland.
