Every time I go to Sundance, the movies I look forward to the most are the horror movies. I love that genre, and there’s always a hodgepodge of them at the film festival. Nothing really stood out to me during the first half of the festival, and then I saw the film Speak with meand it completely blew my mind!
While the movie was creeping me out, I walked out of the theater with a huge grin on my face! This movie is about the occult, and I’ve had my own ideas about movies that are about playing with witchcraft and the occult. I feel like a lot of the movies that have been made in the past miss the mark, especially when they involve teenagers. But this one nails it! Speak with me plays with some big wacky ideas and executes them perfectly.
Speak with me is an incredibly terrifying supernatural horror thriller and one of my favorite films of the festival so far! It provided some crazy nightmarish thrills, but more importantly the story was great, it was well written and the characters were well rounded and properly developed.
The film centers around a group of teenagers who enjoy and find haste in summoning spirit and being possessed by them. Yes, it looks fun. “Spirit summoning has become the latest local party craze and seeks a distraction on the anniversary of the death of her teenage mother Mia (Sophie Wilde) is determined to get a piece of the otherworldly action. When her group of friends gathers for another unruly séance with the mysterious embalmed hand that promises a direct line to the spirits, they are unprepared for the consequences of breaking the rules through prolonged contact. As the line between worlds collapses and disturbing supernatural visions increasingly haunt Mia, she scrambles to repair the horrific damage before it is irreversible.
I loved how the filmmakers handle all the horror elements of the film. It was legitimately scary stuff and it all served the purpose of the story. The scares weren’t thrown in just for the hell of it, but they helped push the story forward in heartbreaking and interesting ways. There were also some cool makeup effects created for the film for the ghosts these guys encounter throughout the film, along with other brutal things that happen.
The film comes from the director duo (and twin brothers) Danny And Michael Philip from the @RackaRacka YouTube channel, and the description says they “suspend us in the realm of foreboding and nightmare making the most of their twisted penchant for the surreal and grotesque. Effortlessly blending the creepiness of a ghost story with the modern sensibilities of a horror thriller for the Insta generation, Speak with me exposes an eerie reality in which the dead roam eerily close to the living.
Speak with me is an incredibly funny and really scary horror film that is easily marketable. This is a must see horror film and is one that deserves a big theatrical release! I could see this very successful horror movie if marketed properly and it could even be the start of a new horror movie franchise! This is one movie you won’t want to miss!
