Joseph Kosinski shares that Iceman storyline in TOP GUN: MAVERICK was conceived by Val Kilmer

This summer’s blockbuster movie Top Gun: nonconformist was a huge hit with fans and critics alike. It brought movie fans back to theaters and showed us that we could get an amazing sequel to a beloved original film 36 years later. One of the best parts of the movie was the return of the Iceman character. Val KilmerHis performance in the role was heartbreaking and nostalgic, and it turns out that the actor himself conceived that storyline.

The director of the film, Joseph KosinskyHe recently sat down with Deadline to talk about some of the film’s best scenes, and he chatted about Kilmer, explaining:

“I will never forget shooting day with him and Tom. That scene with those two guys, two actors at their absolute best doing such a scene, their first time together on camera since 1986. The friendship between the two, the mutual respect between the two of them as real people mirror a lot the characters. So, I think that’s why that scene is so good. When we were putting the film together, we all wanted Val to be a part of it, but we didn’t know what was possible. So, we asked Val to come in and tell him, “We’d love to have you in this movie.” It was his idea to make it as authentic as possible. Once he had that idea, he opened up the whole plot and allowed us to tell this story in a better way. I was amazed when he offered it. The scene was intense and very emotional, but when the camera wasn’t rolling, hearing him and Tom talk about the hijinks of making the first film and how much fun they had and the pranks they were playing on each other, and just the madness of that time and era, it was really fun to listen to. You really felt that connective tissue with the past.

The scene really felt like old friends picking up where they left off, with the utmost admiration and love for each other. Their feelings came through in the scene and it was amazing to watch. I’m so glad Kilmer came back for the film and had the creative input that he had.

Top Gun: nonconformist is streaming now on Paramount+ and is available to rent or own.
