‘M3GAN’ Tops US Box Office Forecasts, But Doesn’t Unseat ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’

‘M3GAN’ Tops US Box Office Forecasts, But Doesn’t Unseat ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’

Though the top spot has eluded him, Blumhouse’s critically acclaimed and viral horror since the first trailer was released a few months ago is officially the first blockbuster hit in theaters of 2023. The film, directed by Gerald Johnstone and produced and co-written by James Wan, it surpassed all expectations by making a total of $30.2 million in its first weekend in the United States, where it opened in 3,509 theaters. According to The Wrap, “M3GAN” was particularly popular with young audiences, with 62% of the collection being in the 18-35 demographic, as well as 53% attributed to female audiences.

In previous weeks, analysts had forecast a US opening of $17-22 million, which would be a strong showing for the Universal Pictures-distributed film, but at $30 million, “M3GAN” surpasses projections. The film cost only 12 million dollars, with which it managed to almost triple its budget in just three days and be profitable from the outset, in line with Blumhouse’s productive manufacturing model. Given this initial success, it is believed that the film could reach 100 million in the United States. At the international box office, ‘M3GAN’ opened with 14.2 million in 35 territories, bringing the global opening to 45 million. While the studio hasn’t made it official yet, the sequel is already underway according to Deadline. And with those numbers, we didn’t expect anything else.

‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ surpasses ‘Jurassic World’

Despite the excellent figures obtained, “M3GAN” could not knock “Avatar 2” from the top step of the podium. James Cameron’s sequel topped the US box office for the fourth week in a row, already racking up $517 million. Globally, ‘The sense of water’ has amassed 1,708 million dollars, a spectacular amount with which manages to surpass Jurassic World (1,672 million) already becoming the seventh highest-grossing film in history globally.

At the international box office (i.e. outside the United States), ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is already the fifth highest-grossing film in history, behind only ‘Avatar’, ‘Avengers: Endgame’, ‘Titanic’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (in other words, Cameron vs. Marvel). Secondly, ‘The Sense of Water’ is officially the highest-grossing film of 2022 and the second of the pandemic erathough it’s a matter of time before it surpasses the first, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ which grossed $1.906 million worldwide.
