Nicolas Cage as Count Dracula in horror comedy ‘Renfield,’ reveals first trailer – Universal (courtesy)
Nicholas Hoult stars in the first trailer for ‘Renfield’, a horror comedy revolving around Count Dracula’s butler. Running for just two and a half minutes, the trailer stands out for its unique atmosphere, but above all for those 15 seconds in which Nicolas Cage makes his appearance, to steal the screen as the most famous vampire in cinema.
A totally different and more modern interpretation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula is in first trailer for ‘Renfield’, Chris McKay’s new horror comedy, the same person responsible for ‘The Tomorrow War’ for Amazon Prime Video and ‘LEGO Batman: The Movie’. The tape is produced by Universal, with an original idea by Robert Kirkman, author of the ‘The Walking Dead’ comics.
In addition to Nicholas Hoult as the protagonist of this hilarious story, there is also Nicolas Cage as Dracula, which makes an appearance towards the end of the trailer. In addition, there is also Awkafina, an actress who has recently gained popularity, thanks to her appearances in ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’, as well as her participation in ‘Bojack Horseman’ as Rutabaga.
About “Renfield”, Nicolas Cage talked about becoming Dracula, last year during an interview for Variety: “I saw Bela Lugosi’s performance, and then I saw Frank Langella’s performance. I looked at Gary’s [Oldman], which I think is sumptuous. Each painting is a work of art. I want it to stand out in a unique way from how we’ve seen it perform. So I’m thinking about really focusing on the movement of the characters.”

Nicolas Cage and the Dracula actors at the cinema
Bram Stoker’s work is considered one of the most important in literature and horror, as well as for his contributions to popular culture. That’s why many adaptations have had several actors like Dracula in the movies, as well as Nicolas Cage. Like Bela Lugosi, Gary Oldman or Christopher Lee, Luke Evans, Gerard Butler and even Claes Bang, among many others.
Dracula has been a point of reference in terms of the representation of Vampires on the big screen, from ‘Van Helsing’ to ‘Twilight’, via ‘Let me in’. These mythological beings have had different interpretations, and ‘Renfield’ is one that promises many laughs, but also moments of terror, as few have dared.
‘Renfield’ has a premiere scheduled for April 14, 2023 and its synopsis teases that it will be extremely violent: “Evil does not extend forever without help. In this modern tale of Dracula’s servant, his tortured assistant Renfield wants to escape the clutches of the most narcissistic boss in history, forcing him to constantly hunt for prey. Renfield does all of his bidding, no matter how humiliating. Or accomplished. After centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there is life outside the shadow of the Prince of Darkness. If only I could figure out how to end such a toxic relationship.”
