2022 has been a relatively normal year for cinemas in our country. Even if the news reminds us from time to time that the coronavirus has not completely disappeared, this year at least we have been able to go to see movies on the big screen without any restrictions or safety measures. Thanks to this, the Spanish box office was able to recover slightly after two terrible years.

As reported by Comscore, the total takings of cinemas in Spain two days from the farewell to 2022 is 379 million euros, or 49% more than last year. In terms of viewers, 61.2 million people attended cinemas this year, 45% more than in 2021.
However, we are still a long way from pre-pandemic care. Comscore notes that this year admissions and box office are still 39% lower than the average admissions and box office for the years 2015 to 2019.

As we have already seen, ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ reached the position of the highest-grossing film of the year in our country in extremis with 21,863,322 euros. James Cameron’s film is managing to fill theaters this Christmas. In fact, Last Wednesday, December 28, was the day with the highest attendance in theaters not only of the year, but of the entire pandemic with 620,000 tickets sold.. The best week of the year was, in fact, the latter with 2.4 million viewers. There is one film that today accumulates more viewers than the sequel to ‘Avatar’ this year, and that is ‘Minions: The Origin of Gru’, which attracted 3.52 million people last summer (‘Avatar 2’ accumulates more money thanks to 3D sessions). ‘The Sense of Water’ has 3.23 million viewers, so it will surpass that very soon. ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ is the third most watched and highest grossing film this year in Spain.
Spanish cinema gets 22% of the total collection
Spanish cinema is also present in the rankings with ‘Padre no hay más que uno 3’ in fourth position and ‘Tadeo Jones 3: The Emerald Table’ in seventh place among the highest grossing films of the year. Spanish films have achieved a market share of 22%, with ‘Los renglones torcidos de dios’, ‘A todo tren 2’ and ‘El cuarto pasajero’ as other triumphs of our cinema at the box office, which exceed 4 million euros each.
