Tribute Games and Dotemu gave Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles a bit of a holiday gift fan. The team has released a free update for TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge! I love this game and it made it to my list of best games of 2022 so getting an update is a real treat. The update is also not small! You can read the full patch notes if you like (below or on Steam), but I’ll give you a quick rundown.

With the update, there’s now a custom game option that lets you flip the virtual dip switches like an arcade machine would. This means you can allow multiple players to be the same character (which won’t be confusing), super attacks can cost health instead of Ninja Power, and more.

Another part of the update included three new filters. There is one filter to make the game look like a VCR and two to mirror CRT screens. One of those CRT filters is also meant to be curved. I’m curious to see what it actually looks like.

Other slightly minor aspects of the update include correct localization for Spanish, French and German; a refresh button for the online lobby; invulnerability when performing a launch and bug fixes.     • A new Arcade Mode has arrived: Custom Match! Just like a real arcade machine: customize your gaming experience using DIP switches: free play, old school Super Attacks, faster enemies, no more taunts and much more! You can see the customization in the custom game lobbies. Progression and unlocking of achievements are disabled in Custom Games.

    • In the Character Select menu, the host can now set a maximum number of players for the lobby.

  • Graphics

    • Added cool filters: CRT (regular or curved) and VCR! Check them out in the Options menu.

CORRECTIONS

  • Game

    • Fixed a rare crash in Arcade Mode when changing difficulty.

    • Cars can no longer deal massive damage when the player is considered armored (Example: Loading a Heavy Swing).

    • Fixed bosses sometimes failing to reach a player positioned at the top or bottom of the level.

    • Fixed bosses sometimes freezing after being hit by Raphael’s Super Flying Attack.

    • Fixed score not being retained for the player when switching characters after a continuation.

    • Fixed April’s Super Flying Attack sometimes appearing to revive KO’d enemies.

    • Fixed reviving a KOed player near the transition point (ex: escalators in Crystal Palace Mall) sometimes preventing progression.

    • Fixed the timer being refreshed for special statuses (example: Infinite Ninja Power) when KO’d or in a cutscene.

    • Guest players can now rejoin the same hosted game.

  • Entrance

    • Fixed input not being evaluated correctly when selecting between Backflip or Roundoff when flipping.

  • Menu

    • Fixed the rare soft lock that occurred in the world map if the user completes stage 8 after finishing stage 10.

IMPROVEMENTS

  • Game

    • Taunt now only fills the first Ninja Power bar.

    • We no longer clear fully stacked Ninja Power bars when KOed on Cold difficulty.

    • Making a throw now grants the player invulnerability.

    • Added more feedback in the HUD when attempting to perform a Super Attack without enough Ninja Power.

    • Many small animation changes have been made to all bosses, often to make attacks easier to read.

    • Fixed Dirtbag pothole collision detection being too wide and deep.

    • Reduced the number of enemies spawned in Zorax’s stampede and the frequency of stampedes. Zorax also has slightly less health when he faces multiple players.

    • Rat King now does Pied Piper less frequently.

    • Improved Super Shredder combat in many small ways for a smoother pace and tweaked some damage values. His grip is now used more frequently and is more efficient, though. Too bad man!

    • Improved pacing of the Statue of Tyranny and changed some damage values.

    • Mother Mouser has a new bite animation to differentiate the charging bite from the idle bite, to give players time to react.

    • Mouser Model 3 and Mother Mouser now act a little faster.

    • Radical Mode damage multiplier is now applied to all throws, super dive attack, and charged heavy attack.

    • Fixed players sometimes repeatedly falling off screen when respawning, at specific locations.

    • Added a Refresh button to the Lobby Search List.

    • We’ve improved the way Arcade Score is calculated: we now record each player individually, even if they leave the game.

  • Location

    • Fixed or improved some strings in Spanish, French and German.

  • Menu

    • The game will remember if How To Play has been seen before, separately in Story and Arcade modes as they differ.

    • Improved the prompt for resetting the story and character progression.

    • Pause menu in Arcade Mode now shows total play time.

  • Vapor

    • Steam Input: Improved support for PS5 controllers.
