Retro game streaming is becoming increasingly popular. The catch is that it was difficult and/or impossible to use the stock hardware to stream some games. Many streamers use more modern hardware such as a pocket analog or emulators. However, for competitive gaming, it’s not always the best as gamers may have built up some muscle memory for the original hardware. This was the case Sebastian Staacks found for an online Tetris competition. Enthusiasts practiced on the original Game Boys, but during the competition they would have to stream their gameplay, which meant that the original hardware was out of the question. So, Staacks has developed a solution.

GB Interceptor lets you use your original Game Boy, Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance to connect to a computer and stream your favorite Game Boy games. You can read a lot of details on his official post or watch his video all about it. This is a really cool fix, and Staacks acknowledges that there are still some issues that need to be fixed. Also, it’s important to note that while you can use it with a GBC or GBA, you can’t play GBC or GBA games with the GB Interceptor.

If this sounds interesting to you, you can create your own GB Interceptor. Additionally, Staacks has made a video that walks you through the process of ordering and building the cartridge. You can find all the files you need on a GitHub and I’ve included the instructional video below. Basically, you need to order the PCB from JLCPCB, get a case (you can 3D print one with a file they provide), get some extra parts, and then do a little assembly. It honestly doesn’t look bad. The key is that when you go to order PCB, the minimum number you can order is five and when I went to ask for a quote, the total came out to about $150 for all five or $30 each. It’s really not bad, especially if you can get a few friends to join.

Do you think anyone will be able to get this to work for GBC and GBA cartridges? Are you going to build one of these GB Interceptors? I think it’s really cool and I’d like to try it sometime if I can find some friends to order PCB with.
