It’s time to take stock of all genres, including cinematic. Twelve months that have come a long way on screens that continue to cry out for help from an audience that still seems to find it too difficult to leave the theater and go to its reference room. And that, compared to the previous two years, box office numbers have improved slightly thanks to a very small group of films that have managed to establish themselves commercially.
The best movies of 2022
10 “Knives in the Back: The Mystery of the Glass Onion”
After the huge and unexpected success of ‘Puñales por el espalda’, it was a matter of time before a sequel was launched. And so, three years and a pandemic later, came “Daggers in the Back: The Mystery of the Glass Onion.” And we were as happy as the first time. Or more.
Released in limited theaters, is what must be sealed by Netflix, we are faced with a sequel that not only lives up to expectations, above, but also, at times, surpasses its predecessor. Again, Johnson has a cast dedicated to the cause where Janelle Monáe’s mesmerizing performance should be highlighted, but what is really important is that it repeats itself even when it comes to shaping a script that is as complex as it is hilarious, as intelligent as it is acidic, as labyrinthine as it is satisfying. One of the great films of this year.

9 ‘like beasts’
The duo formed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen and Isabel Peña continue to subscribe to the happy philosophy of constant success and with their latest work, ‘As bestas’, they deliver what could be considered (and celebrated) as their greatest work to date. A proposal that immerses you completely in its rural atmosphere, its bars of bad luck, its suffocating open fields, its frightening snowy forests and its golden and tense dialogues, also featuring a collection of characters to remember. All of this, of course, beautifully written, directed and acted, thus rounding off one of the great Spanish films of the decade.

8 ‘Alcarràs’
After her celebrated “Summer 1993”, Carla Simón has achieved what seemed impossible to many, namely, exceed the bar and the expectations placed on their talent. And it is that, since it won the historic Golden Bear for Best Film at the last Berlin Film Festival, this “Alcarràs” hasn’t stopped garnering applause from the critics at its feet.
Now, once proven that it also worked for the public and that his career towards the Oscar looks more than good, at least to get the nomination, only that of a masterpiece capable of bringing together each of his moments pieces of a life. A film in which every detail counts and which seems destined, in case it hasn’t happened yet, to be written in gold letters in the history of our cinema.

7 ‘no’
Jordan Peele’s latest film, ‘NOP’ is the latest great example of a film that manages its publicity strategy perfectly to keep the very essence of its story a secret. Instant classic of the sci-fi (and contemporary western) genre., this unique proposition, different, risky, profoundly classic and respectful of its references and stimulating in its constant explosion of genius, is much more enjoyable if you approach it without knowing what you will find. And from there, no doubt, constant enjoyment.

6 ‘X’
Sex and shock. Cinema within cinema and horror within terror. Blood in broad daylight, hungry crocodiles, lost youth and unrelenting tension. Ti West’s ‘X’ clearly points to a classic of the genre and, of course, has multiple reasons for making it. An authentic horror festival that leaves (much) more to be desired and gives away some of the creepiest and most disturbing scenes in recent years.

5 “Five Little Wolves”
Led by an impressive Laia Costa, the main protagonist of a cast in which the total mastery of Susi Sánchez and Ramón Barea should also be highlighted, ‘Cinco lobitos’ is one of those seemingly small films that end up becoming giants. And the best part is that this above transformation occurs thanks to the details, minimal gestures, delicacy and sensitivity of a story whose emotional impact lasts over time, anchoring itself to memory with the same tenderness with which it is told. A wonderful feature film debut by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa.
