Elon Musk has released a pilot episode of an artificial intelligence adaptation of Homer's epic poem The Odyssey, produced using the Grok Imagine image and video generation tool.
The release marks the first public look at a project that appears to have shifted from a planned full length feature film into an episodic video series.
Developed in collaboration with Genre AI, the pilot episode was presented as a technical demonstration of how current generative technology can create cinematic audiovisual content.
According to Grok Imagine, the creation of the pilot episode required 15 days of work. Production involved generating and combining 2,070 static images and 1,558 video clips.
The development team used several specialized techniques to maintain visual continuity across the episode. These included organizing generative outputs as individual camera shots and preparing initial reference images prior to full scene generation.
Grok Imagine noted that introducing subtle imperfections into generated shots helps avoid the overly clean visual appearance common in artificial intelligence media. The software also allowed creators to use reference imagery to lock in character appearances and guide movement with greater precision.
Origins of the AI Odyssey project
The project originated after Musk, the chief executive of SpaceX and Tesla and owner of social network X, publicly expressed dissatisfaction with an upcoming film adaptation of The Odyssey directed by Christopher Nolan. Musk specifically criticized the casting decisions for Nolan's project.
Following his criticism, Musk declared that he would produce his own version of the ancient Greek epic using artificial intelligence. He pledged that the Grok Imagine adaptation would remain historically accurate and faithful to the original literary work of Homer.
Homer's The Odyssey is one of the foundational works of Western literature, detailing the ten year journey of the hero Odysseus returning home from the Trojan War to his wife Penelope.
Future episodes and release plans
Musk had previously stated that a complete feature film version of The Odyssey would be completed before the end of 2026. While a full length movie has not yet materialized, the release of the pilot episode offers the first demonstration of the technology in practice.
The official Grok Imagine account stated that creators are currently working on additional short episodes of The Odyssey to follow the initial pilot. Observers and viewers are waiting to see whether the project will ultimately fulfill Musk's goal of a complete cinematic release.
