A new horror television series based on Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft is in development at a streaming service, entertainment trade Deadline reported.
Screenwriter John August has been selected to write the project, with director Alfonso Cuaron attached as an executive producer. A release date for the series has not yet been announced.
The project will adapt Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft, a spin-off of the original roleplaying game set within a realm of terror. The narrative will center on the vampire Strahd von Zarovich, who serves as an antagonist in the fantasy world. Deadline noted that the series will combine elements of adventure, horror, and a love story.
Gothic horror setting
Dungeons & Dragons is an influential fantasy tabletop roleplaying game first published in 1974. The game system allows players to construct custom characters and embark on story adventures guided by a Dungeon Master. The Ravenloft setting debuted as a standalone adventure module in 1983 before expanding into a popular gothic horror campaign world. In game lore, Strahd von Zarovich is an ancient vampire lord who rules the dark realm of Barovia from Castle Ravenloft.
Creative team background
August is known for co-writing several major feature films directed by Tim Burton, including the animated gothic film Corpse Bride, the fantasy musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the horror comedy Dark Shadows. Burton is an American filmmaker celebrated for his eccentric aesthetic and dark fantasy stories across a four-decade cinematic career.
Cuaron is an acclaimed Mexican director and producer who previously directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban as well as the space thriller Gravity. He has won multiple Academy Awards, including Best Director honors for Gravity and Roma. Deadline, an American entertainment news website tracking Hollywood developments, did not report which streaming platform has acquired the series.
