Country music superstar Dolly Parton has died at age 80 following a brief battle with cancer at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center on Monday.
Representatives for Parton confirmed the singer's death in a statement to People, explaining that she passed away surrounded by loved ones after being admitted to the medical facility on Friday. The family did not disclose the specific form of cancer.
The global music icon had lost her husband of 60 years, Carl Dean, who died in 2025.
Her nephew and head of security, Bryan Seaver, first broke the news to fans on Tuesday in a video message published on social media and shared to Parton's official Instagram account.
Family tributes to country legend
Following the public announcement, Bryan Seaver's sister, Rebecca Seaver, paid an emotional tribute to her aunt in a dedicated Instagram post on Wednesday.
The 39-year-old is the daughter of Parton's 75-year-old sister, Cassie. In her post, Seaver shared a collection of photographs highlighting their lifelong bond, featuring images of Parton looking glamorous during her younger years, childhood photos together, and recent family moments.
"Today, the grief we feel is insurmountable because of the enormous amount of love we all have for Dolly Rebecca Parton," Seaver wrote to her followers.
She reflected on the singer's far-reaching legacy and positive influence on millions, writing: "She has always been the light, not just for those directly in her orbit but for the entire world. We all wanted to be better versions of ourselves for her sake, and I hope we all continue to do just that."
Museum director remembers her confidant
In addition to their personal relationship, Seaver worked closely with Parton in a professional capacity. Seaver serves as the executive director of the Dolly's Life of Many Colors Museum and established the Dolly Archive, an initiative dedicated to preserving the singer's iconic stage costumes, awards, and personal treasures to ensure her cultural legacy endures for future generations.
Describing the profound loss of her aunt, Seaver wrote: "Today, I embark on a new journey: a life without my most trusted confidant. My best friend, my favorite adventurer, my name-giver, my godmother, my precious Aunt Granny."
Seaver expressed comfort in knowing that Parton has been reunited with family members who died before her, including her husband and her mother, Avie Lee Parton.
"I know she has been welcomed into the mystic by Carl and my Mamaw Avie Lee," Seaver wrote. "She is now on her most important celestial journey with God and I know she is at peace."
Seaver explained that her social media message was a "celebration of a beautiful life, lived unapologetically and with the most incredible heart," noting that the performer "never left a rhinestone or a dream unturned." She also urged fans to honor Parton's memory while processing their sorrow, adding that she wanted "us all to remember that joy and grief exist together."

On Wednesday, pop superstar Miley Cyrus also paid tribute to Parton, who was her godmother, sharing her grief with her 205 million Instagram followers.
"The feeling of losing my Aunt Dolly is beyond what feels right to share," Cyrus wrote in her caption. "Our most sacred moments were private and they'll stay there behind the stage, beneath the glamour & between our hearts."
The two artists shared a long-standing personal and professional connection. Parton made a guest appearance on Cyrus's hit Disney Channel comedy series Hannah Montana in 2006. More recently, Cyrus produced a Disney+ concert special celebrating the 20th anniversary of Hannah Montana, which focused on the career and personal guidance Parton had provided over the years.
Cyrus shared that Parton would want her to process her grief through her art and remain resilient. "What I KNOW is Dolly would want me to feel it, write a song about it, and then continue on and be strong. I have an angel by my side. I always have.
