Doctor Vincent Valinducq Explains Dizziness When Standing

Doctor Vincent Valinducq has explained why people experience sudden dizziness when standing up quickly, attributing the frequent phenomenon to orthostatic hypotension during an appearance on French morning program Bonjour ! La Matinale TF1. Almost everyone has experienced this unpleasant spinning sensation at some point when rising abruptly from a sitting or lying position.

Valinducq detailed the simple physiological mechanism behind the condition, noting that gravity causes blood to rush downward toward the legs when a person stands up suddenly. Under normal circumstances, blood vessels constrict and the heart rate accelerates to compensate for the change in posture, maintaining steady blood flow to vital organs.

Orthostatic hypotension, also referred to in medical terms as postural hypotension, is a temporary drop in blood pressure caused by postural change. TF1 is France's leading flagship private television network, broadcasting daily news and morning programming across the country. When the human body fails to react quickly enough to standing, the brain suffers from a lack of oxygen for a few seconds, leading to a feeling of dizziness or even faintness.

Triggers and preventative steps

Several external factors can aggravate orthostatic hypotension and make episodes of lightheadedness more severe. Valinducq stated that dehydration, high environmental heat, alcohol consumption, and certain medications can all worsen the condition. In a related health initiative, French national health insurance provider L'Assurance Maladie launched an awareness campaign emphasizing that blood pressure requires regular attention.

To reduce the risk of dizziness, Valinducq recommended staying well hydrated and breaking down movements into gradual steps. Upon waking in the morning, individuals should sit up and rise slowly rather than springing up all at once, allowing the circulatory system time to adjust blood pressure to the change in height.

Valinducq advised that if dizziness continues to persist despite following these preventative precautions, a medical consultation is necessary to determine whether further clinical evaluation is required.
