Many people believe type 2 diabetes only develops in overweight people, but that is a myth, according to therapist Olga Sukhareva. She addressed the misconception on her Telegram channel.
Sukhareva said the belief is a misconception. She explained that even in people with normal weight, the body's insulin system, whose main element is the pancreas, can sometimes start working incorrectly, or the body's insulin receptors can malfunction. She added that a genetic predisposition to diabetes can also raise the risk in people who are not overweight.

Skinny fat body type raises risk
Sukhareva also said the likelihood of diabetes is higher in people with a body type known as skinny fat. She explained that such people look slim but have a very high body fat percentage and very little muscle mass. She said a lack of muscle is a direct path to insulin resistance, which raises the risk of diabetes.
Endocrinologist Sofya Tsaturyan previously said which foods people with diabetes should avoid, advising them to cut sugar and candy from their diet.
