Disney+ Developing 'Kane Chronicles' Series After Netflix Exit

Disney+ is developing a television adaptation of "The Kane Chronicles," the fantasy trilogy by author Rick Riordan set in the world of Egyptian mythology, according to a report from Nexus Point News. The project is being led by Riordan himself alongside writer and director Angela Robinson at 20th Television.

The series has not been officially announced, and no casting details have been revealed.

Netflix's failed attempt

The push for a Disney+ series comes after Netflix's own plans to adapt "The Kane Chronicles" collapsed following several years of development. In 2024, Riordan announced that he had regained the rights to the story after the Netflix project failed to move forward, prompting him to look for other options. The new report suggests he has found that option in a television deal with Disney+.

Riding on Percy Jackson's success

The development follows the success of "Percy Jackson and the Olympians," Disney+'s live-action series based on Riordan's best-known book series, which centers on Greek mythology. The show's third season is set to premiere on November 20, 2026, and is expected to expand further on the story than the two feature films that adapted the books over a decade ago.

The Percy Jackson series has become one of Disney+'s best-performing original productions, notable for its success outside of the platform's more established franchises such as Star Wars and Marvel Studios. It holds a 95 percent critics' score and an 82 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting its strong reception.

A shared mythological universe

While the Percy Jackson books drew on Greek mythology, "The Kane Chronicles" is built around Egyptian gods and legend. Riordan's three novels in the trilogy are set within the same fictional universe as both the Percy Jackson series and "Magnus Chase," another of his book series rooted in Norse mythology.

That shared universe raises the possibility of an eventual crossover, something that would become more feasible if a single streaming platform held the rights to all three properties. If the Kane Chronicles series receives the green light to move into full development, it would lay the groundwork for Riordan's books to grow into a franchise with multiple series running at once on Disney+.

What comes next

No release date has been confirmed for the potential Kane Chronicles series, and it remains too early to say when, or if, it will move forward.
