Disney+ has started production on a television series based on Ubisoft's Far Cry video game franchise, starring Steve Buscemi in a leading role. The streaming platform announced the start of production for the live-action project, which will be distributed globally.
The series is executive produced by Noah Hawley and Rob Mac. Hawley is the creator of the anthology series Fargo and Alien: Earth, while Mac's credits include It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and the Emmy-winning docuseries Welcome to Wrexham.
Ensemble Cast and Production Team
Buscemi, Mac, and Lizzy Caplan were the first actors announced for the adaptation. They are joined in the ensemble cast by Brendan Gleeson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Hamish Linklater, Sam Spruell, and Jamie Demetriou.
Buscemi is an acclaimed actor known for his roles in Boardwalk Empire, Fargo, and Reservoir Dogs. Leigh earned critical acclaim for her role in The Hateful Eight, and Linklater recently starred in Midnight Mass. Hawley has established a reputation for television adaptations through his work on FX's Fargo, which adapted the tone of the 1996 Coen brothers film into an anthology format. Mac, also known as Rob McElhenney, co-created the sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and executive produced Welcome to Wrexham, which won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program. Anthology Format and Story Details
The first season of the Disney+ adaptation will tell an original story rather than directly adapting a specific installment of the game saga. The series will follow an anthology structure, with each season introducing a new storyline, a different setting, and a new group of characters.
Hawley compared the structure of the series to his work on Fargo. He indicated that every season will present a variation on a central premise, maintaining the identity of the franchise while allowing the narrative to reinvent itself with each installment.
The original Far Cry game, launched in 2004, follows Jack Carver, a former special forces soldier living in the Micronesia archipelago. Carver runs a boat rental business until a journalist hires him to explore the region, leading to a confrontation with mercenaries after the journalist is kidnapped.

Developed and published by Ubisoft, the first-person shooter series is known for placing players in exotic environments ranging from tropical paradises to vast deserts, offering total freedom within an open-world setting.
