The Direção-Geral de Saúde issued a health alert on Friday for mainland Portugal, warning that an air mass carrying dust from North Africa will lower air quality across the entire coastal strip on August 8 and 9, 2026.
According to a note from the Direção-Geral de Saúde, the incoming desert air mass will increase concentrations of natural inhalable particles known as PM10 across the mainland. Health officials warned that these particles affect human health, particularly among sensitive groups such as children and the elderly.

Health authorities advised the general public to avoid prolonged physical exertion, limit outdoor activities, and refrain from exposure to tobacco smoke or irritant products while the dust event continues. Children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic respiratory issues such as asthma or cardiovascular conditions should remain indoors with windows closed whenever feasible.
