Denture cleaning tablets offer an unexpected solution for removing stubborn yellow sweat stains from white cotton shirts, according to publication Smakosze.
Discolouration under armpits can ruin favourite clothing, and standard laundry detergents do not always work on the first attempt. While fresh sweat marks can be lifted using simple household remedies like baking soda and vinegar, older stains present a tougher challenge for regular washing machine cycles.
The publication reported that denture cleaning tablets serve as an effective alternative. Because the tablets dissolve readily in water, they help soften stubborn grime and fabric discolouration before items go into a standard wash.
Yellow marks under armpits develop when proteins in human perspiration react with aluminum compounds in antiperspirants. Denture tablets contain effervescent ingredients, including sodium bicarbonate and citric acid, alongside mild oxygen-based bleaching agents. When dissolved, these compounds create micro-bubbles that break down organic deposits without harsh chemicals.
How to treat set-in armpit stains
To remove sweat marks using denture tablets, Smakosze outlined a straightforward multi-step process. Users should fill a bucket with warm water and dissolve two to four tablets, selecting the exact quantity based on the size of the stain and the number of garments being soaked.
The entire item or just the stained area can be submerged in the solution. The clothing should remain in the water for eight to twelve hours, with an overnight soak highlighted as the most convenient option.
In the morning, the item should be removed from the bucket, rinsed thoroughly with clean water, and laundered in a washing machine as normal. If any yellow trace remains after the wash, the entire process can be repeated.
Cotton is a natural cellulose fibre known for absorbency and durability. Because woven cotton traps organic material within its threads, prolonged soaking gives active oxygen agents enough time to break down bonded stains that quick washing machine cycles miss.
Fabric care and thermal precautions
Smakosze warned against drying clothing at high temperatures if the yellow stain has not completely disappeared. Heat causes residual grime to bind more firmly into the fabric, making future removal far more difficult.
The denture tablet method is best suited for white and light-coloured cotton. For items made from silk, wool, or synthetic materials, the publication recommended applying a small amount of the dissolved mixture to an inconspicuous spot first to check how the fabric reacts.
Care labels must always be reviewed prior to soaking, as some garments should not be left in water for long periods or treated with bleaching agents. Furthermore, Smakosze advised against mixing denture tablets with other cleaning chemicals, noting that repeating the treatment is safer than blending different formulations.
