Four passengers were hospitalized after smoke filled the cabin of a Delta Air Lines transatlantic flight, forcing the aircraft to make an emergency landing in Portugal on Saturday, September 26.
The incident occurred aboard an Airbus A330 carrying 286 customers from Barcelona, Spain, to Boston in the United States. British newspaper The Sun reported that 14 people on board suffered from smoke exposure and required medical assistance.
During the flight, an onboard alarm sounded as smoke began spreading through the passenger cabin. Travelers were forced to put on emergency oxygen masks while the flight crew diverted the aircraft toward Portugal.
The jetliner landed safely in the city of Porto. All 286 passengers were evacuated from the aircraft and subsequently transferred to another flight to continue their journey.
