American singer Debbie Gibson performed on stage in Melbourne, Australia last week as part of English pop group Go West's 40th anniversary concert tour.

The 56-year-old artist wore a pleated mini-skirt and a low-cut bedazzled bra while dancing during the show, later removing her high heels so she could dance properly on stage.

Melbourne Performance and Tour Context

Gibson joined Go West for the Australian leg of their tour in Melbourne, the coastal capital of Victoria. Go West, an English pop group formed in the 1980s, is currently celebrating 40 years in the music industry.

Gibson first rose to international prominence at age 16 following the release of her 1987 debut single Only in My Dreams. Later that year, she released her debut album, Out of the Blue, which spawned a string of hits on the music charts.

Among those tracks was Foolish Beat, which made Gibson the youngest female artist to write, produce, and perform a Billboard Hot 100 number-one single. The Billboard Hot 100 is the standard United States music popularity chart published weekly by Billboard magazine.

Chart Success and Theatre Career

She followed her debut with her 1989 sophomore album Electric Youth, which spent five weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart. The record yielded the number-one hit Lost in Your Eyes, and Gibson holds sole songwriting credit on all of her singles that reached the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100.

Following the release of her third album, Anything Is Possible, in 1990, Gibson's music sales began to slide. The songstress subsequently moved into acting and musical theatre, finding commercial success on Broadway in New York City's renowned theatre district.

She staged a mainstream comeback in the mid-2000s after posing for Playboy in 2005 and starring in low-budget sci-fi films, including Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus and Mega Python vs. Gatoroid alongside fellow 1980s pop star Tiffany. Gibson also appeared on reality television programs including The Celebrity Apprentice, Dancing with the Stars, Sing Your Face Off, and America's Most Musical Family.

Reality Television Pressure and Future Dates

In a recent interview with Australian newspaper the Sydney Morning Herald, Gibson admitted that she faced pressure to exaggerate her wealth while appearing on an unnamed real estate reality television show during her early 40s.

"It was in my early 40s. I had been doing reality shows, and I was on a show about real estate," she said. "I did not have the money to be buying a $10 million apartment in New York City at that time, but, because these shows are supposed to be aspirational, the show didn't want to do tours of $3000-a-month rentals. That kind of dishonesty felt like I was selling my soul a bit," she continued.

Reflecting on her early career, Gibson added: "It was a symptom of how I started in the music business. When you start out you're told you're supposed to do whatever is asked of you to sell records, and so you get a little brainwashed into saying yes and disconnecting from what is authentic."

Gibson will wrap up her Australian tour on September 5 before launching her Christmas tour in December in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 2022, she released her first holiday album, Winterlicious.
