Dave Bautista has revealed his physical transformation for playing Kratos in Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television's upcoming live-action God of War television series.
The former professional wrestler returned to weight training in preparation for filming to resume in the autumn. Sharing a video of his workout regimen, Bautista stated that he was in his third week of lifting weights and estimated he had two remaining months to reach his physical target, adding that returning to the gym felt like riding a bicycle.
Bautista stepped into the lead role after American actor Ryan Hurst was forced to exit the production. Hurst suffered a torn biceps while executing a stunt during filming, an injury that required surgical intervention and an extended recovery period. The setback temporarily halted filming and compelled producers to find a replacement for one of the most physically demanding characters on television.
Recasting and Production Schedule
Bautista brings extensive action experience to the role following a long career in professional wrestling and prominent feature film roles. Hurst, known for his work in major television dramas, had originally been cast to bring the legendary warrior to life before the injury interrupted shooting.
Cameras first began rolling on the adaptation in Vancouver last February. Despite the production pause caused by the recast, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television remain committed to their original schedule of shooting two seasons back-to-back.
Vancouver has long served as a primary production hub for large-scale television projects, offering the sprawling landscapes and studio infrastructure required for major fantasy adaptations. Streaming platform Prime Video will broadcast the completed series internationally.
Adapting the Norse Saga
The first season of the live-action series will focus on the Norse era of the video game franchise. Spanning 10 episodes, the narrative follows Kratos and his young son Atreus as they embark on a journey across the Nine Realms to scatter the ashes of Faye, who was Kratos's wife and Atreus's mother.
Young actor Callum Vinson stars alongside Bautista as Atreus. The ensemble cast also features veteran actor Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor.
Showrunner Ronald D. Moore created the adaptation with a commitment to preserving the dark, epic, and emotional weight of the original video games. Developed by Sony's Santa Monica Studio, the game franchise earned widespread acclaim for blending intense action with a grounded story of fatherhood.
First launched on PlayStation consoles in 2005, the God of War series initially centered on Greek mythology before pivoting to Norse lore in its 2018 reboot. Moore, an experienced writer and producer of acclaimed television series, is structuring the 10-episode first season to allow the central father-son relationship room to develop across the fantasy setting.
