Tarasova explained that the essential first step in controlling personal finances is determining where money is actually being spent. Conducting a comprehensive spending audit helps individuals pinpoint specific categories where cuts can be made without reducing overall quality of life.

When shopping for discounted goods, Tarasova recommended focusing on the final total purchase amount rather than the advertised discount percentage. Retail promotional discounts can create an optical illusion of savings, encouraging consumers to buy items they do not need simply because they appear marked down.

Tarasova emphasized the importance of analyzing small but frequent daily expenses. She noted that evaluating the cumulative cost of a routine habit over a month or a year provides a much clearer picture than looking at individual prices.

Managing routine spending habits

Micro-purchases, such as daily takeaway beverages or minor subscription fees, often escape notice because their individual cost appears negligible. Over time, however, these small recurring transactions can represent a substantial portion of an annual household budget, making habit tracking a core element of financial planning.

Tarasova also suggested purchasing seasonal items well ahead of time to take advantage of lower off-peak prices. She explained that winter outerwear is best bought during spring or summer, while items intended for summer vacations should be purchased in autumn or winter.

Leveraging off-season prices

Retailers routinely apply steep discounts to seasonal inventory during off-peak months to make room for upcoming seasonal merchandise. Consumers who plan their major purchases months in advance can significantly lower their annual retail expenditure by taking advantage of clearance sales when demand is at its lowest.

The recommendations come shortly after financial expert Elena Drozdova warned in mid-August against allocating final cash reserves toward real estate, calling the practice a fatal calculation error. Drozdova added that buying stocks with one's last remaining savings and living beyond one's means to maintain a false impression of social status carry high financial risks.

Avoiding critical financial missteps

Financial advisors generally recommend maintaining a dedicated emergency liquid savings fund before making major capital investments or purchasing volatile assets. Depleting liquid cash for property or equities leaves households exposed to sudden income disruptions or unexpected expenses without immediate emergency financial relief.
