Coffee study rules five cups safe but warns on cup sizes

Health experts say drinking five cups of coffee a day may benefit heart health, but cup sizes and total caffeine matter most for daily intake safety.

Coffee study rules five cups safe but warns on cup sizes

Drinking up to five cups of caffeinated coffee daily is safe for healthy adults, according to the American Heart Association. The organisation stated that this amount may support heart health, while research also points to positive effects on the liver.

Verywell Health reported that these findings support evidence of moderate coffee drinking as part of a healthy lifestyle. Coffee contains polyphenols, which are natural compounds that may provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits while researchers study their exact mechanisms.

Caffeine limits and serving sizes

Nutrition studies define one cup of coffee as 225 ml, but coffee shops often sell portions of 355, 475, or 600 ml. Specialty drinks can also include several espresso shots. A person who drinks five large portions receives far more caffeine than study designs specify.

Experts focus on total caffeine intake rather than the number of cups consumed. Most healthy adults can safely consume up to 400 mg of caffeine daily, which Verywell Health noted equals roughly three to five 225 ml cups of brewed coffee. Caffeine levels vary based on coffee bean types, brewing methods, and serving sizes, meaning two similar drinks can hold different caffeine amounts.

Dietary advice for blood pressure and gut health

The publication also noted earlier dietary guidance regarding post-dinner drinks and digestive health. Dietitians stated that unsweetened hibiscus tea helps control blood pressure because it is naturally caffeine-free and rich in plant compounds. Doctors added that asparagus, artichokes, and cruciferous vegetables are among the best foods for gut health.
