A death certificate obtained by People magazine on September 2 revealed that Knowings died from cardiac arrest. The document listed asthma as an underlying condition, while acute hypoxic respiratory failure and status asthmaticus were recorded as the immediate conditions leading to her death.

Status asthmaticus is a severe, acute form of asthma that does not respond to standard medical treatments such as bronchodilators, making it a critical emergency. Acute hypoxic respiratory failure occurs when the lungs are unable to transfer adequate oxygen to the oxygen-rich blood required by vital organs and brain tissue.

All That Career and Roles

Knowings was best known for her role on All That, Nickelodeon's flagship sketch comedy series designed for younger audiences. She appeared on the show for three seasons between 1997 and 2000, having earned her major break on the program.

During her tenure on the series, Knowings played several memorable characters, including Penny Lane and Jessica on the recurring "Whateverrr!!!" sketch alongside former child star Amanda Bynes. Beyond All That, Knowings also appeared in three episodes of the long-running children's educational series Sesame Street alongside her twin brother, Chris Knowings.

Former co-star Kenan Thompson, 48, paid an emotional tribute on Instagram after learning of her death. "Man this one hit hard!!! Rest well Christy!!! Never could have imagined this day!! Sending so much love to her family!! She was a real one and one of the funniest people out here!!! Gonna miss you buddy!!! Show @christyknowings some love y’all!!!" Thompson wrote.

Reflections on Gloria Bankhead

In a 2019 interview with Bustle, Knowings reflected on her favorite experiences performing on the sketch comedy set as a teenager. "My favorite moment on set was when I started to do this character in Season 6 named Gloria Bankhead. She was an over-the-top Martha Stewart," Knowings recalled.

"I had never played any character like her! I just remember being on set and being her all-day long. Everybody loved it! The writers, the stage managers, everybody was just like, 'Hi Gloria!' Gloria Bankhead was my favorite character to play," she said.

Knowings added that she stayed in character even when cameras stopped rolling. "She was on set like that all the time. It was fun to just be in character like that, even when the cameras weren’t rolling. It’s what I’d do constantly," she told the outlet.

Loss of Co-Star Kianna Underwood

Knowings' death occurred seven months after the loss of another All That cast member, Kianna Underwood. Underwood died at age 33 in January following a hit-and-run collision in Brooklyn, New York.

Underwood appeared on All That for seven episodes in 2004 and 2005, according to her IMDb page. She joined the sketch comedy series for its tenth and final season, replacing original cast member Jamie Lynn Spears.

In addition to her television work, Underwood appeared in the feature film The 24 Hour Woman, which starred Patti LuPone, and voiced a character in the animated film Santa Baby!. She also participated in stage productions, touring with the musical Hairspray, before leaving professional acting as an adult. Underwood was living in New York City at the time of her death.
