Charlie Hunnam revealed new details about his upcoming Sons of Anarchy spinoff Legends, describing the FX project as "definitely comedic" in an exclusive interview with Live From E! on the red carpet at the 2026 Emmys.
The British actor, who earned his first career Emmy nomination for playing killer Ed Gein in Monster: The Ed Gein Story, spoke to Live From E!'s Keltie Knight before the Sept. 14 ceremony about what fans can expect from the meta project.
"I feel like I won just getting up every day, getting to do what I love and getting paid for it," Hunnam said. "This is just a little icing on the cake, but always nice to be invited to the party."
What Legends Is About
Hunnam, 46, is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his performance as the grave-robbing killer in Monster: The Ed Gein Story. His next project reunites him with the Sons of Anarchy cast for Legends, a spinoff he has called a longtime passion project.
Asked whether he might ever trade his on-screen intensity for a rom-com, Hunnam instead offered a glimpse of the comedic bent of Legends. "A little funny, I hope," he said of the show.
He explained that he plays a version of himself in the midst of "a midlife crisis, nervous breakdown," who gets invited to a 10-year reunion for Sons of Anarchy at a convention, "and it all goes horribly wrong."
Sons of Anarchy is the FX biker drama in which Hunnam starred as Jax Teller, a role that made him a household name before he moved on to films and other television projects.
A Near Miss With Zendaya
Hunnam and his partner, Morgana McNelis, had their own close call at the Emmys when the actor almost caused Zendaya a wardrobe malfunction, though he pulled back in time.
"Can you imagine? Devastating," he said. "She was being ushered at full speed through the crowd by a little squadron of bodyguards, and so I just stepped back right as she was rushing by and almost stepped on her dress."
McNelis "looked at me, like, 'Dude, don't be a dork,'" Hunnam recalled.
Stiff Competition in His Category
Hunnam faces a crowded field for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, including Matthew Rhys for The Beast in Me, Riz Ahmed for Bait, Jason Bateman for Black Rabbit and Oscar Isaac for Beef.
Regardless of the outcome, Hunnam said he already considers himself a winner, and he is eager to begin shooting the "spinoff-ish" Legends.
A Dream Pulled Him Back
In a separate, recent interview with E! News, Hunnam said the idea to revisit Sons of Anarchy grew out of his own subconscious.
"I'd been having just a lot of dreams about being on set with that cast again," he said, "and I realized there was something in my subconscious that was yearning to bring that crew back together."
