Tongue ligation (ankyloglossia)

In tongue ligature (ankyloglossia), the strip of skin that connects the baby’s tongue to the bottom of the mouth is shorter than normal.

Some bilingual babies don’t seem bothered by this. In others, it can restrict tongue movement, making breastfeeding difficult.

Tongue bandage is sometimes diagnosed during a newborn’s physical examination, but it is not always easy to detect. It may go unnoticed until your baby has trouble feeding.

Tie marks on tongue

To breastfeed successfully, a baby must grasp both the breast tissue and the nipple, and the tongue must cover the lower gums, protecting the nipple from damage.

Some tongue-tied babies cannot open their mouths wide enough to fully fit the breast.

treat tongue tie

Treatment isn’t always necessary if your baby has a tongue ligation, but he can eat without problems. If their diet is affected, treatment includes a simple procedure called splitting the tongue ligation.
