Pam Hogarth will receive the Visual Effects Society Founders Award this year for her contributions to the art, science and business of visual effects and for her outstanding community service. He and Jeff Barnes, Patricia “Rose” Duinan, Tony Pace Carstensen and David Tanaka will also receive lifetime memberships from VES, with three-time Academy Award-winning director Pete Docter becoming an honorary member.
They will be celebrated in a special event in October.
“Our VES award-winners represent an exceptional group of artists, innovators and professionals who have made a significant impact in the field of visual effects,” said Lisa Cook, chairman of the board of VES. “We are proud to recognize those who have helped shape our shared heritage and continue to inspire the next generation of visual effects professionals.”
Hogarth, who served eight terms on VES’s board of directors, was twice elected first female vice president and chair of its education committee. She has also served as secretary of the Los Angeles section of VES. Now retired, she headed the Digital Media Institute of Hollywood and helped develop the digital program at the American Film Institute. She also founded Eido, a company that trains IATSE members on digital effects and, as an industry liaison, helped transform Gnomon’s School of Visual Effects into one of the best schools for digital production careers.
Barnes, executive vice president of creative development at Light Field Lab, was honored for his distinguished service to the community and visual effects industry. A longtime leader in the visual effects community, he was chairman and vice chairman of the board of directors and co-chair of the VES summit.
Duigan, who sits on the VES Education Committee, was the first marketing director of Industrial Light & Magic, where he worked for more than a decade. He started working on visual effects.
