“A Drop in the Sea”: Why Russian Cinema Cannot Conquer Asia

Klim Shipenko’s tape “broke” the foreign market, but this is an exception.

Due to isolation, filmmakers in Russia decided to adapt films for the Asian market. There are successful examples: Klim Shipenko’s “Kholop” raised $20 million at the foreign box office.

But Russian cinema will not succeed in conquering the Asian market. Film critic Oksana Agapova shared this view in an interview with the PopCornNews portal.

“This is a drop in the ocean. This is not what will save us and lift cinema off its knees. Yes, it will help a little, give a new influx, new Asian film festivals. But this does not replace the importation of what has happened to Russian cinema before,” says the expert.

According to her, even if India conditionally wants to buy Russian films, it will do so in exchange for showing its own films.

“Kholop is an excellent story for us. He’s so alone. Most likely, if Russian cinema enters the Asian market, it will occupy a very small niche there. Conditional: three percent of the total box office distribution. We do not have a world view of a carrier of pop cultural values, such as American or French cinema. Waiting for a breakthrough is difficult,” concluded the critic.
