Disney Pixar’s highly anticipated new film, Lightyear, appears to have failed over the opening weekend.

The film, which is a prequel to Buzz Lightyear’s Toy Story character, had one of Pixar’s worst box office opening weekends.

It was released in the US and UK on June 17, but failed to remove Jurassic World: Dominion from # 1 in theaters.

According to knowledgeable personDisney bosses had predicted the film would gross about $ 70 million over the opening weekend, even though it only grossed about $ 50.5 million nationwide.

As with other Pixar films that failed over opening weekend, Lightyear is down with Ratatouille, which grossed $ 47.2 million in 2007, The Good Dinosaur and Onward.

On the IMDb movie database site, Lightyear only has a 5.2 / 10 rating, however, on Rotten Tomatoes it has a 75% rating.

The reason the film didn’t go as planned could be that it was released shortly after Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World: Dominion.

This meant that on Father’s Day weekend, many viewers could choose to see the other films instead.

According to UNILAD, those films grossed $ 44 million and $ 58 million over Lightyear’s opening weekend, placing the Pixar film among the biggest box office hits.

That said, it’s possible Lightyear could be a hit as Disney Pixar fans have seen something similar happen with the movie Coco.

The 2017 film opened at $ 50.8 million in the US and was a huge hit, grossing $ 210 million in the US and over $ 800 million worldwide.

Although the film did not come out in some countries after it was banned due to depicting a homosexual relationship.

Lightyear became a controversial topic in several Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, for a kissing scene in the film.

Chris Evans, who plays the character in the film, has since come out and criticized those who refuse to show the film, calling the powers behind the country “idiots”.

Speaking to Reuters, he said: “The truth is these people are idiots.

“There will always be people who are afraid and don’t realize it and will try to hold on to what happened before.

“I think the point is to ignore it, move on and embrace the growth that makes us human.

“It’s hard not to get a little frustrated because it also has to be a talking point. The goal is that we can get to a point where this is the norm, and that it doesn’t have to be uncharted territory, which ultimately is. “
