Nowadays it is difficult in Tom Cruise to imagine somewhere, except the next blockbuster “Mission: Impossible”. But in the 90s, Cruz was not only the most cash register of Hollywood-Hey, he was seriously considered a competition for the status of a large dramatic actor.

Then he actively worked with the greatest directors of his time – from Stanley Kubrick to Sidney Pollak. And it was then that he was a step away from the leading role in the film, which eventually received a cult status – “Escape from the shows.”

Cruise seriously considered participation in the film adjustment of Stephen King “Rita Hayworth and Salvation from the Showson.” The main reason is the chance to work again with Rob Rainer, with whom he just worked in “different good ones”. Rainer started producing the project through his Castle Rock Entertainment Studio and even wanted to post the film itself. But the screenwriter and future director of Showsonka Frank Darabon refused: he wanted to take out the photo himself and did not even give up the mail for solid money.

According to the memories of the Demplar, Cruz reached the script read, but in the end he left the project:

“I think he was a bit nervous because of the fact that he should work with the debutant. I don’t blame him for this.”

Darabon later admitted that Cruz might not really fit in his vision:

“Maybe he was too big a figure for the film I wanted to make. It was not a hero if Paul Newman in a” cold -blooded hatch “. There was a little less loud, more modest.”

At that time, Kruz only chose proposals with trusted directors. His track record was:

  • Sidney Pollak (“Company”)
  • Rob Rainer (“Different good boys”)
  • Ron Howard (“Far, Far”)
  • Tony Scott (“Thunder Pass”)

And Darabont was an unknown value at that time. Of course nobody knew that Showshenk would be the number one film in the IMDB assessment for decades – it seemed too unpredictable before he filmed.

Cruise was not the only one who could reach the “escape from the show -core”. Brad Pitt was called the role of Tommy – that very small but important character that seems closer to the end. Pitt had already been agreed, but after the success of Telma and Louise he changed his mind and started playing in an interview with a vampire – only with cruise in partners.

Darabont tried to call other stars in the project. They were discussed at different times:

  • Robert Duval
  • Jin Hackman
  • Paul Newman
  • Clint Eastwood

But it went no further than the conversation. Kevin Costner and Tom Hanks also left the leading role (he finally opted for Forrest Gump).

Interestingly, years later, the ratio of Cruise to the director of the department has changed. In Mission: Impossible he repeatedly trusted the next part of the young directors – for example Jay Abramsu or Brad Bird. And now he is going to work with Alejandro Gonzalez injarrita. Perhaps the same cruise is that once not only chose blockbusters, but also interesting “smart” films finally returns.
