In 2009, young director Duncan Jones made the science fiction film “Luna” for just $ 5 million.

Then the project seemed modest and room – there are almost no actors in the frame, the landscape is minimal, at least special effects. But time has passed and now the “moon” is considered one of the best indie films in his genre. All thanks to one person – Sam Rocuella.

At the time of filming, Rockwell was known as the charismatic actor of the secondary plan – he already had a “Green Mile”, “Angels Charlie”, “Magnificent Scam” and even “Murder of Jesse James.” But the “moon” was the first really leading role for him, and even double: he plays with two clones of the same hero once. It does not create them with the help of a wig and makeup, but exclusively by acting – with different gestures, intonations, reactions.

One hero is tired, surrendered and holds on to his last strength. The second is young, aggressive, evil for everything in the area. And at some point it is not scary that it is fantastic, but how recognizable it all looks.

The film was conceived as a personal project: Jones wrote it specifically under Rocuella and even called the protagonist Sam. Another actor, it seems, could ultimately be able to deal with, but in the end it is difficult to introduce someone else in this role.

The idea of the film is in the spirit of Science Fiction of the 70s: “Cosmic Odyssey”, “Alien”, “Silent Flight” but with a much more human bias. One person at the moon station ends his three -year contract. Everything seems to go to the final until there is an accident … and his clone comes on stage.

The film received the Hugo Award for the best science scenario and is still considered a model of the “smart” science fiction genre. In 2019, against the decade of Exit, Rockwell called him ‘a milestone in his career’. And although he only received an Oscar for the three billboards in 2017, many still believe that he was even a real reward then for the “Moon”.
