Peter Jackson has not made films for more than ten years – but is not going to retire

Since 2014, Peter Jackson has not released any feature film – his last work in this format was the last part of the Hobbit.

In the past decade, the director focused on producing, documentary and unexpectedly on biotechnologies. Against the background of a long -term break, many have already decided that Jackson was quietly retired. However, he categorically denies this.

In an interview with Screenrant, the director immediately stated:

“No, no. I am absolutely not retired. Now we immediately work on three scenarios.”

One of them is already partially known – this is the “Hunt for the Gollum”, the new chapter in the history of “Lord of the Rings”, which Jackson writes with Philip Boyers. Andy Serkis will direct, shooting starts in 2026.

Apparently Jackson will do business again in the coming years. This is what he is doing now:

  • Three scenarios – Jackson personally writes various new projects at the same time, one of which is associated with the Lord of the Rings
  • “Gollum hunting” – The film will tell about the events before Frodo Shir left; In the middle of the plot, Gandalf’s task is for Aragorn: to find Gollum until he gave too much to Sauron
  • Producing and documentary -Jackson continues to work on projects related to The Beatles (in 2021 he shot the documentary mini series The Beatles: Get Back)
  • Investments in biotechnology – the director has invested in colossal cinemas, which will “revive” the disappeared bird; Jackson himself admitted that to see this with his own eyes “exciting even more than making a movie”

With regard to the “Hallum Hunting”, the release is already planned for December 17, 2027 – the date can, however, move, since Disney has set the Prime Minister of the Avengers: Secret Wars Crossover on the same day. The return of Viggo Mortensen and Ian McCels is in doubt, although both have shown interest. Mackellen is already 86 – and he himself with irony noticed that the studios “better to hurry”.

So the pension is canceled: Peter Jackson returns – even if it is not in the role of blockbusters – director, but clearly will not disappear calmly from the stage.
