Sorry, Tolkien fans: not today.
What is the “ideal fantasy film”? Perhaps it is one in which the atmosphere, the universe, the characters and the plot are equally balanced and fascinating: there is no such thing that we easily forgive flat characters just for the sake of a charming world, or tolerate another stupid plot device because we love the actors and characters too much (yes, this is a stone in the garden of “House of the Dragon”).
It is difficult to make such an ideal film or series, but many films have managed to come as close as possible to the ideal. Today we have collected 10 excellent fantasy films that are not spoiled by even minor flaws.
It seems that the key to success for fantasy is not to drown in clichés or even try to turn stereotypes to your advantage. This is clearly proven by films like ‘Brave’ and ‘Maiden and the Dragon’ – anyone who is not yet tired of the stereotype that ‘princesses always need saving’ can always rewatch ‘Sleeping Beauty’.
Nevertheless, the same “Maiden and the Dragon” clearly had room for improvement. Many critics noted that the film could have explored the impact of the cruel rules of the universe on women in more depth; moreover, in the novelization of the film, the parallel between the main character and the dragon is traced much better – it is a pity that this was not included in the film itself.
But we absolutely love the trend towards dark fairy tales, misleading expectations and stories about strong girls!
