8 Most Expensive TV Series of Our Time: You Didn’t Even Record Number 2, But It Cost More Than “Avatar”

Huge funds for multi-episode shows often go to waste.

You’ve probably heard that “House of the Dragon” and “Game of Thrones” are some of the most expensive TV series of recent years, but you can hardly imagine how much ahead of their competitors in terms of spending, which have not even achieved a tenth of such popularity. Amazon has spent the most money on failed projects in recent years.

Take “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” for example – the first two seasons cost the media giant a staggering billion dollars to produce.

The costs are unprecedented, because one episode of, to put it mildly, not the best fantasy show of our time, costs the creators 58 million dollars – according to this indicator, the series is also a leader. But the second place will surprise especially those who were waiting for “Game of Thrones” or “Stranger Things” there.

Another Amazon series that proved to be even more disastrous than The Lord of the Rings, Citadel, gets a “silver” anti-rating. Think about it, on KinoPoisk this show has less than 4,000 ratings, and on IMDb it has a modest 6.2 points out of 10, and that’s with 50 million dollars per episode! And that’s six in total. Even the legendary first Avatar was cheaper.

‘Stranger Things’ rounds out the top three with its ‘modest’ 30 million ‘evergreen’ per episode, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see the production price go up in the fifth season after the promised runtime extension. It’s followed by WandaVision with $25 million and House of the Dragon with $20 million.

The top seven also included Game of Thrones, See and The Morning Show, with an episode budget of $15 million.
