Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series, which highlights the year’s most talked about screenplays, continues Spider-Man: Across the Spider-VerseSony’s successor, Sony Pictures Imageworks and Marvel’s pioneer Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse which won the 2019 Oscar for Animated Feature Film.
Phil Lord returned to write the script for the sequel with his Lord Miller cohorts Christopher Miller and Dave Callaham. Joaquim Del Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Powers directed the ambitious sequel, which featured multiple animation styles and over 280 variations of Spider-Man.
This storyline is about continuing the exploits of Miles Morales as Brooklyn’s very own Spider-Man. Reunited with Gwen Stacy, he is catapulted across the multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People – from Lego Spider-Man and Mumbattan’s Pavitr Prabhakar to the Spider-Punk voiced by Daniel Kaluuya – who must survive protect. But as the heroes argue over how to deal with a new threat, the Spot, Miles faces the other Spideys and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can help save the people, what he loves most.
Shameik Moore returns as the voice of Miles, as do Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, Mahershala Ali, Luna Lauren Valdez and Brian Tyree Henry. Jason Schwartzman voices Spot, and the star-studded voice cast includes Oscar Isaac, Issa Rae, Greta Lee, Amandla Stenberg, Jharrel Jerome, Karan Soni and Andy Samberg.
During Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles, Lord said the challenge is to go beyond the groundbreaking original.
“If your brand is one of surprise and innovation, that means you have to start over because you can’t take it back. We all got together and said, “What could be more ambitious?” How can we create looks and worlds that are completely surprising in animation and just as groundbreaking as the previous film? he said. “But really it was about: How can we delve deeper into the relationships of the characters? How can we make this film a more complete emotional experience?”
