As KP Sport newspaper said, behind the “king of football” Pele is a completely different person named Edson Arantis do Nascimento. The future football player was given such a complex long name at birth. The parents wanted to name their son in honor of the American inventor Thomas Edison, but accidentally missed the letter “and” in the birth certificate.
The pseudonym Pele appeared years later at school. Then young Edson was a fan of the goalkeeper of the Vasco da Gama club Biele. However, the name of the idol did not give to the boy, and he called him Pele. This nickname has been passed down with the footballer through time.
