Toshi Ichuyanagi

Toshi Ichuyanagi he was Yoko’s first husband. She and the successful pianist met after he moved to New York from Japan in the 1950s to attend the Julliard School. Yoko was also interested in music and at one point she studied at nearby Sarah Lawrence College. They became romantically involved and eloped in 1956, starting a life together filled with experimental art and music. Anthony Cox

Yoko got married Anthony Cox, film producer and arts promoter, in 1962, the same year she divorced Toshi. They met in 1961 after Anthony saw Yoko’s artwork in an anthology and found it in Tokyo, Japan. The two struck up a romance and married in 1962, but the marriage had to be annulled the following year after Yoko was unable to successfully finalize her divorce from her first husband, Toshi, early. They remarried in June 1963 and welcomed their daughter, Kyoko Chan Coxin August of the same year.

Anthony ended up becoming Kyoko’s full-time caretaker when Yoko continued her craft, causing a rift between them.
