Carmen Borrego, the Spanish television collaborator and sister of Terelu Campos, has reappeared on a beach in Málaga with her arm in a cast, days after a fall that fractured a bone in her left wrist and sent her to hospital.
News of the accident broke last Friday on the programme 'El verano se mueve', where her friend and colleague Belén Rodríguez reported in real time that Borrego had broken something while the star was still at the hospital. According to the account given on the show, Borrego tripped while helping her son pack his bags, and instinctively put her hand down to stop herself falling and protect her head, fracturing a bone in her wrist in the process.
A five-week recovery
Borrego will need five weeks to recover from the injury. The fall happened during a fresh stretch of holidays in Málaga, where she remains. She had just spent a week at her family's holiday home there with her son, José María Almoguera, who was preparing to return to Madrid. She was helping him gather his belongings when she lost her balance, with what she has described as fatal results for her wrist.
Back on the sand, but carefully
Despite the injury, Borrego has stayed on in Málaga and answered questions from her Telecinco colleagues as she headed to the beach. She cannot submerge her injured left arm, but she can still sunbathe and take careful dips in the sea while the cast remains in place over the coming days. She rented a sunlounger to avoid putting extra strain on her hand, and was seen draping several towels over her straw parasol to shield herself from prying eyes as she lost herself in her phone or dozed off in the sea breeze.
Cooling ties with Terelu Campos
Borrego has stayed largely quiet about the accident, aware that a fuller account is expected of her back in the television studio, where she will detail what happened and how she has coped with the cast once her stay in Málaga ends and she returns to her routine.
The fall capped off a difficult summer for Borrego. It began with controversy over the sale of the Málaga home belonging to her late mother, the veteran broadcaster María Teresa Campos, a dispute that saw Borrego step back from the row while her sister, Terelu Campos, was left to face it alone. The two sisters have since experienced a cooling in their relationship, driven by tensions involving their children, José María Almoguera and Alejandra Rubio. Separately, the car belonging to Borrego's husband, José Carlos Bernal, was struck and wrecked while parked directly outside their home; those responsible have not been found, and hope of identifying them has faded.
Terelu Campos fills in the details
Even as Borrego stays tight-lipped, Terelu Campos has already offered some details of the incident. She said her sister had spent the morning at a shopping centre and had lunch before Terelu urged her to go to hospital and get checked over before heading home. Borrego took the advice and sent her sister a photo of her arm in the cast.
Terelu Campos said her sister had been told the recovery would take five weeks, though the cast itself would not stay on that long. She said she had been told that in around ten days doctors might remove the current cast and fit something else in its place, but that this would most likely happen once Borrego was back in Madrid rather than in Málaga.
In the meantime, Borrego has settled for relaxing on the beach with a nap in the shade, the sound of the sea in the background.
