Buffy Stars Reunite at Emmy Awards After 30 Years

Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz reunited at the Emmy Awards, joking about Buffy's stalled reboot and honoring late castmates.

Buffy Stars Reunite at Emmy Awards After 30 Years

Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, who starred together on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, shared the stage as presenters at the Emmy Awards, reuniting on screen 30 years after the show first premiered.

Boreanaz described the series to the audience as the story of a teenage girl chosen by fate to fight vampires, demons and the forces of darkness, who then falls in love with a vampire with a soul, one who carries several hundred years of regret with him.

Joking about a stalled reboot

The pair also appeared to reference the long-awaited reboot of the series, which had reportedly been set to be directed by Chloe Zhao but now appears to have been shelved. Boreanaz told Gellar that he had always thought her character, Buffy, and his character, Angel, would end up together. Gellar replied that she supposed they would never find out, a line that drew laughter from the audience.

Remembering castmates who died

Gellar also acknowledged that the past two years had been difficult for the show's cast and crew. Two of their former co-stars, Anthony Stewart Head and Nicholas Brendon, died within the last year. Gellar said they had been very lucky to have known and worked with such incredible people.

A cult classic turns 30

Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered nearly three decades ago and followed Gellar's title character as she balanced high school life with her destiny as a vampire hunter chosen to protect the world from supernatural threats. Boreanaz played Angel, a centuries-old vampire cursed with a soul who became one of Buffy's great loves across the series. The show developed a devoted cult following over its original run and helped launch both actors into wider fame. The Emmy Awards, handed out annually to honor achievement in American television, gave Gellar and Boreanaz the platform for their reunion, more than 20 years after the series ended.
