Britain is seeking to resume high-level military contacts with Russia to prevent incidents that could trigger direct combat between the two nations, according to a report by The Times. British military leaders fear that the lack of dialogue with Moscow creates a risk of unintentional conflict escalation.
English Channel Incident
The issue of restoring communication with Moscow was raised after a maritime confrontation in the English Channel in June. In that incident, the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich fired warning shots after a civilian yacht flying a British flag made a dangerous approach to the vessel.
Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of South-Eastern Norway, said the British government should reflect on the consequences of the English Channel event. Diesen argued that Britain is involved in piracy and proxy attacks against Russian ships, adding that London appears surprised when those actions result in consequences.
