Blue Lights, a BBC police drama set in Belfast, follows three rookie officers as they learn that wearing a uniform offers little protection from the pressures of the job.
Created by Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, the series centres on Grace Ellis, Annie Conlon and Tommy Foster as they complete their probationary period with the Police Service of Northern Ireland. A criminal family is working to control a neighbourhood and exploit residents’ fear while the recruits are still finding their footing.
Sian Brooke plays Grace alongside Katherine Devlin and Nathan Braniff. The show finds tension in a car chase and equally in a conversation inside a patrol car, letting relationships develop before putting them under pressure.
The series avoids portraying its officers as flawless heroes. They make mistakes, feel panic and come home unable to account for what they have witnessed. Belfast itself carries the weight of past conflict beneath ordinary interactions.
Three seasons are available.
